Spoiler alert: this post contains Greys Anatomy spoilers. Don’t read if you like a surprise.
I can’t believe I am writing you this letter, but I am.
I’m rather upset.
I have been arguably one of the most loyal Greys Anatomy fans in the Southern Hemisphere for the last eleven years. I have watched all the episodes more than once (present season excluded), and the some of them too many times to count.
I’ve been there through plane crashes and bombs in body cavities and a gunman in a hospital. I’ve seen the characters pull through the most outrages circumstances, and have never rolled my eyes, because they were always an emotional gold mine. Of all the shows out there, yours is the only that I’ve known to take the ridiculous and still make me believe it and bawl through out.
But, and I hesitate to say this, Greys needs to end now.
In all truth it should have ended seasons ago. Meredith and Derek had their happy ending, and their doctors coats, and it should have been the end. They should have got their happily ever after, and we could have walked away wondering what happened in their future, but happy that it was ok for now.
Instead, they are being destroyed.
I could get over Denny Duqette, and George and Izzy leaving. Lexie’s farewell had me in tears, and then Mark’s. They deserved better than they got. But I could cope with all of that if you hadn’t done this.
That wasn’t fair.
I was unhappy with how Cristina left too; a friend who uses their parting words to undermine your marriage is not a friend you want around. I think that could have been done differently. You ruined her for me then. She’s always been selfish and opinionated, but that annoyed me. I feel like you destroyed her, to create tension between Meredith and Derek. Tension they didn’t need. The show has enough of that going on.
This season, stylistically, has been my favourite. The back and forwards episodes, the flashbacks, the putting everything in context. I just wish it had been a few years ago, and it had ended there.
When I watched Derek’s last episode – and I knew it was coming. Not because of all the leaks on social media (thanks for that everyone), but because you gave us enough clues to see it, I thought he had died straight up. That he never braked in time, and that all the rest – the saving of the other occupants, was just his brain processing how he died.
Can I just say, that’s how it should have happened.
To save him, then kill him, was unfair. To not have the neurosurgeon in the hospital on time (and why not by the way? The man Derek saved had a head injury. He should have already been there!), and have him die because of a medical error was just rude. To force Meredith to do what she did, on her own, which of course she would do, was just cruel. If he had to go, it should have been straight away.
I’m not impressed Shonda. And not because of the death, (because yes it’s a fictional character and there’s actual real problems in the world, I know), but because you should have done it better. You short-changed us all with that. Derek and Meredith deserved better.
Your fans deserved better.
The series needs to end. I’ll miss it, but it needs to finish. Before everyone is destroyed and there’s no one left to cry about.
